Handling of paper submissions
The new editors set out their plans for the PCRJ in the first editorial of 2011.
Each submission undergoes an initial thorough assessment in the weekly Editors’ meeting and about 40-50% of submissions are rejected at this stage, typically within a week of submission.
Each paper selected for peer review is then managed by a dedicated Associate/Handling Editor who is responsible for organising international peer-review assessments which are used to inform the final decision.
The overall average time from submission to first decision is currently 18 days, and the average time from submission to final decision 36 days.
International nature of the PCRJ
The international nature of the PCRJ is reflected in its published papers. Submissions are regularly received from across Europe, North America and Australasia, and increasingly from South America, South Africa and Asia.
It is also reflected in the Journal’s Editorial Board which is made up of many leading primary and secondary care academics and internationally recognised key respiratory opinion leaders from around the world.
As is appropriate for a primary care-focused journal, the PCRJ has a much stronger interdisciplinary basis than many of its competitors, with contributions from, amongst others, the fields of public health, epidemiology, social sciences, medicine, nursing, pharmacy and health policy.
